A price guide that watches the lot

The problem

Buying a used side-by-side, boat or bike means opening twenty dealer tabs and guessing. The listing does not say how long it has been sitting. It does not say the price was $2,000 higher last month. It certainly does not say what three identical units were last asking before they left dealer sites last quarter. That information exists — it is just never written down.

What we do about it

We visit each dealer's own site on a schedule and record what is there. A price change is an event. A listing that disappears and stays gone is recorded as having left the dealer's site, with a date we can defend. Over time that produces the three numbers a buyer actually needs: what it costs, how long it has been available, and what similar machines were last asking before they left. Throttle does not see sale prices, and says so wherever it cannot verify one.

Rules we hold ourselves to

• Dealer sites first. Any marketplace or aggregator we read is listed on how ThrottleBot works.
• Never called sold. A listing that leaves a dealer site is never called sold, and a bad crawl draws no conclusions.
• No invented numbers. When there are too few comparables, the page says so instead of drawing a chart.
